As a college student with cancer, I felt it first hand that a lot of the research goes to the elderly cause they are the ones who come first to mind when someone mentions cancer patient, and so a lot of resources are kind of tailored toward them. And the type of cancer that kids often get are well funded because who wants a young kid in need going through things like that without the charity of others? But a lot of the time the in between do not have the resources like disability benefits because maybe they're college students and don't have the full-time jobs to meet the requirements for surviving on disability, but can't stay in school due to their condition, and can't keep their medical insurance under their parents anymore due to their age, but need it. And they tend to be single, but not kids anymore, so a support system is harder to find. If I recover from this and can finish my schooling, I plan on donating money to young adult disability funds when I am able. They are always in desperate need of things that we use everyday and don't think about.. I stayed in 1 last year and it was hard to even locate basic items like toothbrushes and combs, makeup, baby wipes, diapers, shampoo etc. Even used clothing...socks are a big thing that goes fast.. Some women go to the shelter with nothing but the clothes on their back..that's it. When I was staying there I was amazed at how quickly cheap things went like Kool Aid and Cookies and Bread, Cereal, etc. Things like tylenol and aspirin, cough and cold medicine and any type of children's medicine id always needed.. things like toys and colors/coloring books,, easy but cheap things. Those places do not charge a fee to live there and so everything is donated. There are so many people with the disease that need to be tested and after they are tested they need support and facts. You can log on to the CDC or Hepatitis Central and they will provide pamphlet, information etc. Allot of the Veterans have the disease from shots etc... Just an idea..I helped start one in Maryland and it was amazing how many people came out and talked about it. There is still a stigma and little or no research goes towards it and it kills more people than Aids...Good luck and whatever you do will be helpful, we all need to give back....
